Programs

B.Tech.
The program includes courses in the basic sciences, engineering sciences, humanities and social sciences, and a number of electives besides the courses in the principal areas of study in Civil Engineering. The constant effort to modify the academic curriculum strengthens the program continually. The students are groomed to be good civil engineers capable of taking up challenging assignments.

M.Tech. (Environmental Engineering)
Considering the growing need for technical manpower having expertise both in the quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, introduced this postgraduate program in 2007.

M.Tech. (Geotechnical Engineering)
This program is designed to elucidate the student with wide spectrum of various Geotechnical Engineering problems through several courses, both general and specialized, followed by research leading to a thesis. The students are trained to develop expertise in both.

M.Tech. (Infrastructure Engineering and Management)
The Department of Civil Engineering introduced this M.Tech. program in 2011 in realization of the major role that civil engineers play in development of infrastructure. The program has been designed to lay equal emphasis on all aspects of development of infrastructure projects over its life-cycle. The program has a broad category of subjects covering the critical issues relating to planning, financing, design, construction, and management of infrastructure projects. The program will enable the students to acquire skills and develop competencies to manage both small and large-sized infrastructure projects.

M.Tech. (Structural Engineering)
This program is designed to acquaint the student with the various aspects of Structural Engineering through several courses, both general and specialized, followed by research leading to a thesis. The students are trained to develop expertise in both analysis and design aspects of the structural engineering.

M.Tech. (Transportation Systems Engineering)
Considering the growing need for technical manpower having expertise both in the quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of Transportation Systems Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, newly introduced this postgraduate program in 2007.

M.Tech. (Water Resources Engineering and Management)
Considering the growing need for technical manpower having expertise both in the quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of water resources, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, introduced this postgraduate program in 2003. The products of this program are expected to acquire necessary skills to address major water resources problems concerning all forms of its sustainable use. The students are trained to develop expertise in both theoretical and practical aspects of the Water Resources Engineering with special emphasis on Management.

M.Tech. (Earth System Science and Engineering)
The objective of this unique programme in Earth System Science and Engineering is to produce skilled personnel’s with a knowledge-base, integrating scientific and engineering approaches in Geosystem management. Such a training programme is especially relevant, considering the global requirement of trained professionals working in non-renewable energy resources. North-eastern region of India is in a seismic zone that demands close monitoring of geophysical parameters, as well blessed with un-explored and systematically quantified natural resources. Impetus will therefore be on various spheres of earth system and the challenges imposed by human intervention on the system.

Ph.D.
The Ph.D. program is aimed at helping the student to acquire proficiency in the chosen area through course work, followed by doctoral research work. Students typically would be taking up experimental and theoretical research work in major areas of Civil Engineering such as Environmental Engineering and Sciences, Geotechnical Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering and Management, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Earthquake Engineering and Earth System Science and Engineering.
